Toolbox of Children’s Books – Disability Representation

Our research supports inclusive education by enhancing critical literacy around disability in children’s literature. An integral part of curricula in primary years are children’s books. Children’s books are part of the social justice movements in classrooms by offering perspectives that shape student self-conceptions and worldviews.
Where children’s books do depict disabled characters, these representations can often perpetuate ableism. Our project aims to fill a crucial resource gap by creating content that doesn’t just include but celebrates disability within classrooms.
This project is developing resources to assist teachers in engaging in disability justice within their classrooms. These resources were created to critically engage with disabled representation in children’s books.
