Parents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This project seeks to understand the promising and best practices for supporting parents with intellectual disabilities in their parenting journeys.

It includes literature reviews, focus groups with parents with lived experiences and a survey of key informants (professionals who work to support parents with intellectual disabilities).

Parents with intellectual disabilities face many barriers to accessing effective supports and services designed to support thriving in their parenting role.

This study identified that discriminatory assumptions about people with intellectual disabilities and their capacity to succeed in the role of parent generate and exacerbate barriers to autonomy, empowerment, and independence. Opportunities to further research and practice in this area are shared.
