Abstract
Parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face significant barriers to thriving in their parenting roles, including limited availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of services and supports. To better understand these challenges and identify opportunities for improvement, Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) partnered with the UBC Canadian Institute for Inclusion and Citizenship (CIIC) on a multi-phase community-based research project. This report presents findings from the third and final phase of this project, which explored service providers’ perspectives on gaps and opportunities in supporting parents with IDD. Forty-six service providers from across British Columbia participated in a survey sharing their perspectives on available resources and supports, client needs and barriers, and providers’ knowledge and experiences working with parents with IDD. The findings identify key gaps in current service provision, as well as opportunities to strengthen supports and better meet the needs of parents with IDD across the province. The report concludes with recommendations for CLBC to consider in enhancing services and supports for this population
